Alice B. Toklas wrote her cookbook in the early 1950s, after Gertrude Stein's death, partly to support herself, and made it a memoir of their life together in Paris and the French countryside: meals for Picasso and Matisse, the privations of the war years in the Bugey, recipes gathered from friends. It is the domestic life of the century's most famous lesbian couple, told through what they ate.

The American edition, published by Harper in 1954 with illustrations by Sir Francis Rose, left out one contribution, the painter Brion Gysin's recipe for "Haschich Fudge". The London edition printed it, the recipe made the book notorious, and the 1968 film I Love You, Alice B. Toklas took its title from the legend.
