Wojnarowicz's first book. In the late 1970s, hitchhiking across America and living on the margins of New York, he collected the stories of hustlers, drifters, truckers and runaways, then shaped them into first-person monologues that keep the rhythm of speech. A first version circulated as a photocopied zine in 1978; Aloes Books in London published this edition of 500 in 1982, edited by Max Blagg and introduced by William S. Burroughs.
The voices of the road and the waterfront return in everything Wojnarowicz made afterwards, from the paintings to Close to the Knives. Much of the American stock is thought to have been pulped when the distributor closed around 1984, and the monologues were reissued, expanded, as The Waterfront Journals in 1996.
Signed and dated NYC '83, with a brief autograph note laid in.
