In 1961 and 1962 Eikoh Hosoe photographed Yukio Mishima in and around the writer's house in Tokyo, in staged, dreamlike scenes of the body, roses, a coiled garden hose and Renaissance paintings. The first edition of Barakei (1963), designed by Kohei Sugiura, is one of the great Japanese photobooks.
For this new edition Tadanori Yokoo redesigned the book entirely, regrouping the photographs into five chapters, with his own illustrations inside the portfolio. Mishima wrote a new preface and gave the work the English title Ordeal by Roses, in place of Killed by Roses. He killed himself in November 1970, and the book appeared in January 1971: a monument to him that he had helped to shape.
