Joe Brainard took Nancy, Ernie Bushmiller's comic-strip girl, as an alter ego from 1963 until he largely stopped making art in 1978, placing her in more than a hundred works; in the If Nancy Was series of 1972 she becomes, among other things, a boy. Ron Padgett, his friend since their school days in Tulsa, recalls that Bushmiller, on hearing of the works, threatened to sue.
This hand-pulled lithograph of one of the earliest Nancy collages was printed by Toby Michel at Angeles Press in a numbered edition of 100. It comes slipcased with Siglio's The Nancy Book (2008), edited by Padgett and Lisa Pearson, which gathers the If Nancy Was drawings and Brainard's Nancy collaborations with Frank O'Hara, James Schuyler, Ted Berrigan and other poets of the New York School: the fullest record of how a Pop image became, in his hands, something tender, funny and queer.
