George Platt Lynes was the photographer of the ballet company that Lincoln Kirstein and George Balanchine built, from the American Ballet of the 1930s through Ballet Society to the New York City Ballet. His studio pictures, staged with painted backdrops and theatrical light, record Balanchine's dancers in the roles he made for them.

This book, edited by Jack Woody for Twelvetrees Press in 1985 and printed in gravure, gathers that work with texts by Balanchine and Lynes. It is the public half of a divided career: the same years produced Lynes's male nudes, kept largely private in his lifetime and later acquired by Alfred Kinsey's institute. Here the two meet, since Lynes's eye for the male body is everywhere in his photographs of the dancers.
