Mapplethorpe's portrait book: artists, writers, musicians, socialites and friends from New York in the late 1970s and early 80s, photographed with the same formal severity he brought to flowers and nudes. Jack Woody's Twelvetrees Press in Pasadena printed it in 1985, to the standard of its books on George Platt Lynes.
The introduction is by Susan Sontag, who had sat for him, and was later collected in her essays as "Certain Mapplethorpes". Seen together, the portraits are an index of a social world, downtown and uptown at once, recorded in the years when AIDS began to empty it.
Signed by Mapplethorpe and inscribed "For Nicholas".
