From 1980 Keith Haring drew in white chalk on the black paper pasted over empty advertising panels in the New York subway, working fast and often arrested, and made thousands of drawings that lasted only until the next poster went up. His friend Tseng Kwong Chi photographed them in place, and Art in Transit (1984), with an introduction by Henry Geldzahler and design by Dan Friedman, is the record of that work.

The subway was where Haring found both his public and his vocabulary of radiant babies, barking dogs and flying saucers, which he carried into everything that followed. The book is also a document of Tseng, who died in 1990, weeks after Haring, and whose photographs are now recognised as a major body of work in their own right.

Signed by Haring with his plus sign, on the page showing his arrest.
