The first substantial monograph on Paul Cadmus, written by Lincoln Kirstein: co-founder of the New York City Ballet and Cadmus's brother-in-law, married to his sister Fidelma. Kirstein had championed him since 1934, when The Fleet's In!, a painting of sailors on shore leave, was removed from an exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery after protests from the Navy and made the young painter notorious.

Cadmus worked slowly in egg tempera, the technique of the Italian Renaissance, and used it for subjects his contemporaries avoided: sailors and their pickups, bathers at Coney Island, the deadly sins as allegory, his own circle of friends and lovers. Kirstein reads him as a moralist and a classicist rather than a provocateur, and the book was part of the renewed attention Cadmus received in his last decades.
