Warhol's first mass-produced book, made in 1967 at the Silver Factory with the help of Stephen Shore, Paul Morrissey, Ondine, Nico and others, and published by Random House. It is less a monograph than a Pop object: a pop-up castle and biplane, a Hunt's tomato paste can that springs off the page, a fold-out accordion, a nose to lift, a balloon, and a flexi-disc with a portrait of Lou Reed.
Photographs of the Factory crowd sit between the paper engineering, so the book doubles as a group portrait of Warhol's circle at its most productive. It turns the book itself into a medium for the ideas that drove his work, seriality, packaging and celebrity, and anticipates the artists' books of the decades that followed.
