The catalogue of Mapplethorpe's exhibition at the Frankfurter Kunstverein, 10 April to 17 May 1981, edited by Peter Weiermair. Weiermair, an Austrian curator, later wrote The Hidden Image (1988), a history of the photographed male nude, and edited a monograph on Arthur Tress.

Fifty-nine full-page plates make it a substantial early survey, published two years before Mapplethorpe's first trade monograph and at the moment European institutions began to show him. It gives a clear view of the work as it stood at the start of the 1980s, before the fame and the controversies that followed.
