Radar, published in Basel by Edition C.L.A.G. from 1982 to 1988 as a magazine between Basel and New York, issued an original photographic print with its numbers. The first issue, in 1982, came with this gelatin silver portrait of William S. Burroughs by Robert Mapplethorpe.

Burroughs, then sixty-eight, was the elder statesman of the downtown world Mapplethorpe photographed: the author of Naked Lunch, whose 1966 obscenity trial in Boston helped end literary censorship in America, and, like Mapplethorpe, an artist who made the forbidden his subject. The portrait belongs to the series of artists and writers that Mapplethorpe gathered in Certain People.

Stamped on the verso and unsigned, as issued.
