The second of the Tom of Finland Foundation's retrospective volumes, published in Los Angeles in 1991, the year Touko Laaksonen died in Helsinki. Its 192 pages follow a career that began in the advertising studios of postwar Finland and produced the leathermen, bikers, police officers and sailors that shaped how gay men saw themselves for half a century.
The Foundation, which Laaksonen established with Durk Dehner in 1984 to keep the work together while most museums kept their distance, published these books as an archive in print. The argument has since been won: in 2014 Finland issued postage stamps of his drawings.
