Tom of Finland's Pekka runs away to the circus in the fourth of the Pekka books, which Revolt Press in Sweden, the publisher of Tom's comic-strip stories in the 1970s, first issued in 1977. This American version carries a story by Edward D. Wood Jr., the director of Plan 9 from Outer Space, who in his last years wrote erotic fiction for the adult publishers of Los Angeles.

The pairing is less unlikely than it looks. Both men worked at the margins of postwar American popular culture and have since been reclaimed: Wood as a cult auteur, Tom as one of the most influential artists of gay visual culture.
