Andy Warhol started Interview in 1969 as a film magazine and by the late 1970s had turned it into the house organ of a new kind of celebrity: stars interviewed at length, often by other stars, with the tape recorder's digressions left in. Under the editor Bob Colacello, with cover portraits by Richard Bernstein, it was the printed counterpart of Studio 54.

This tabloid-format issue from May 1980 catches the magazine at that moment, and shows its part in inventing the voice of downtown New York. Among its contributors is Fran Lebowitz, who began her career at Interview in the 1970s with a back-page column called "I Cover the Waterfront".
