Madonna's Sex was published by Warner Books on 21 October 1992, the same week as her album Erotica. Its aluminium covers, spiral binding and sealed Mylar bag made it impossible to browse. Steven Meisel's photographs, with art direction by Fabien Baron and editing by Glenn O'Brien, stage her fantasies in Miami and New York with Isabella Rossellini, Naomi Campbell, Big Daddy Kane and Vanilla Ice, and with the dancers and club figures of the gay New York she came out of.

It appeared at the height of the AIDS crisis and the culture wars, two years after the Mapplethorpe obscenity trial in Cincinnati, and was attacked as pornography and defended as a manifesto of sexual self-determination. The essays collected in Madonnarama (1993) made it a set text of 1990s cultural studies.
