Goldin and David Armstrong became friends as teenagers in Boston around 1969 and spent the next twenty-five years photographing the same world, often the same people; for a time they shared an apartment. A Double Life sets their pictures side by side: Goldin's saturated colour against Armstrong's composed black-and-white portraits, intimacy against reserve.

Scalo published it for the joint exhibition at Matthew Marks Gallery in New York and the Museum für Gestaltung in Zurich in 1993 and 1994. It is the clearest record of a friendship that shaped both careers; Goldin later championed Armstrong's work at the Rencontres d'Arles in 2009, and he died in 2014.

Signed by both photographers and inscribed.
