Burg is the second of the four books Tillmans made with Taschen, after his debut volume of 1995 and before Truth Study Center (2005) and Neue Welt (2012). He edited and designed it himself: friends, lovers, nightlife and still lifes, laid out in the open, non-hierarchical sequences that also shaped the way he hung his exhibitions.

The essay is by David Deitcher, the American critic and historian whose Dear Friends (2001) recovered nineteenth-century photographs of men together. The book came out as Tillmans showed at Andrea Rosen in New York in the autumn of 1998, two years before he won the Turner Prize.

Signed and inscribed by Tillmans to a friend, and dated October 1998.
