A career survey edited by Peter Weiermair, the Austrian curator and author of The Hidden Image, a history of the photographed male nude. Eighty duotone plates run from Tress's documentary work in Appalachia in the late 1960s through The Dream Collector, Shadow and Theater of the Mind to the constructed tabletop still lifes and male figure studies of the 1980s and 90s.

It is a good single account of a career that is hard to see whole: Tress has been a documentarian, a surrealist, a gay photographer and a maker of tabletop theatres, sometimes in the same decade.
