Soldiers: The Nineties gathers pictures of young men in uniform that Tillmans collected or took between 1990 and 1999, the decade of the Gulf War and the wars in the former Yugoslavia. His own photographs of soldiers on trains, at stations and in crowds sit beside images cut from newspapers and magazines and stills from video.

The book asks what the soldier stood for in those years: a figure of violence and state power, and also an object of desire, seen with the tenderness Tillmans gave his friends and lovers. It was published for his 1999 exhibition at Maureen Paley in London, the year before he became the first photographer to win the Turner Prize.

This is the deluxe edition, copy 6 of 12 plus two artist's proofs, in a purple clamshell box with a signed colour photograph of a soldier, also numbered 6.
