Nan Goldin edited Couples and Loneliness with Taka Kawachi of Korinsha Press in Kyoto, drawing on two decades of her work: couples, friends and nudes, many in the saturated colour of her flash.

The title names the tension that had organised her work since The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, the slide show she began in the late 1970s and published as a book in 1986: the need for intimacy, and the solitude that persists within it.
