Goldin's book of the drag queens and trans women who were among her closest friends, photographed over two decades: from Boston in the early 1970s, where The Other Side was the drag bar that gave the book its name, to New York, Berlin, Manila and Bangkok. Scalo published it in 1993.
The pictures insist on their subjects as people rather than spectacle: getting ready, at home, in love, growing older. Steidl issued an expanded edition with a revised introduction by Goldin in 2019, and the original is now a document of how a photographer of that generation looked at trans lives, with affection and without condescension.
Signed and dated by Goldin, with an inscription.
