A compact exhibition catalogue from the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel, California: twenty-six plates surveying Tress's work, introduced by the French novelist Michel Tournier.
Tournier is an unexpected and illuminating reader. His novel The Erl-King (1970), which won the Prix Goncourt, has a photographer of children at its centre, and in 1970 he helped found the Rencontres d'Arles, the photography festival. He shared Tress's interest in myth, childhood and the uneasy edges of fantasy, and wrote about him more than once.
