The catalogue of Tillmans's exhibition at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, October to December 2004, edited by the curator Shihoko Iida, with texts by Iida and Minoru Shimizu.
It takes its title from his series of the same name: large pictures made in the darkroom without a camera, by moving light over photographic paper, which look like filaments of colour suspended in liquid although they are made only with light. Freischwimmer is the badge a German child earns on first swimming unaided, and the word carries a sense of standing on one's own feet that suits these images. Tillmans has described his abstract work as a form of freedom.
