From The Dream Collector, the series Tress began in the late 1960s by asking children about their dreams and nightmares, then photographing staged scenes with them in the vacant lots, beaches and derelict buildings of New York. Published as a book in 1972, it made his name and remains a touchstone of staged photography.

Tress later said it was a myth that each picture illustrates a particular child's dream; the scenes are his own inventions, built from what the children told him. That makes the series as much about the adult imagination of childhood as about childhood, and it is why the pictures still unsettle.

A large-format print, signed, titled, dated and numbered 10/50.
