Between 1974 and 1985 Hujar photographed New York after dark: costumed crowds on Halloween, derelict interiors, cruising grounds in the city's parks, empty loading docks and parking lots, and the abandoned West Side piers. Most of the pictures had never been shown when Matthew Marks Gallery and Fraenkel Gallery exhibited them in 2005.

Bob Nickas's essay places the work in the tradition of street photography, yet these pictures are quieter and stranger: a city as it looked at the hours when gay life took place at its margins. The piers are the territory Arthur Tress photographed in Dockside Interview, and where Hujar's friend David Wojnarowicz wrote and painted.

Forty-three plates.
